A hostage standoff in Martinsburg, West Virginia has ended. Police say the woman who was being held hostage is dead and her former boyfriend is in custody.
A quiet neighborhood in Martinsburg, West Virginia is now a crime scene. Just before Noon on Sunday, West Virginia State Police were called to a domestic situation at 10 Raider Lane. They say it quickly turned into a hostage situation. At one point police were able to talk with the victim.
"Early, early on yesterday, there was some dialogue with her," says West Virginia State Police Captain Rob Blair. Twenty-seven hours after the situation started, the hostage was reported dead and her former boyfriend 37 year old Winchester Resident Donald Surber was taken into custody. Neighbors identify the victim as Katherine Nicole Sharpe.
Doug Morris lives just a few streets down from where the hostage situation happened and he knew the victim.
"She was a very nice person, very nice girl, I used talk to her when she was planting out there all the time. I put her star up there for her on her house and she was just a very, very nice person," says Morris.
Another neighbor says Surber caused a lot of problems for Sharpe. She says at one point Kathy Sharpe told her that if she ever saw Surber around her house to call police. Following the hostage incident, you can see shattered windows with apparent bullet holes through the shades. Something residents in this neighborhood are not used to.
"We have never had problems like this before as long as I've been here, it's a very quiet, very lovely neighborhood, I enjoy it here," says Resident Carol Stotler. Morris says Sharpe leaves behind two children.
Residents in the Ridgefield Subdivision are being allowed back into their homes.
