Anti-PATH Demonstration
Only weeks after PATH West Virginia Transportation filed paperwork to move forward in building a high energy power line through Jefferson County, people from that state, as well as the other two states which path is planned in, are fighting back.

More than 40 people from Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia gathered to fight against the Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline project -- more commonly called PATH -- to keep the project out of all three states.
"It shouldn't be in anyone's back yard," Protester, Keryn Newman, sand. "It's not needed, the power is going to the northeast corner, they're taking coal-fired power out of West Virginia when we should be moving towards green technology."
Newman, and others at the demonstration, say that's one of the biggest issues -- that path could be supplementing power to New Jersey. But, when TV-3 Winchester News interviewed Michael Gogol on May 15th, he said that's not the case.
"We're trying to balance the energy needs for this region with the public interest," Gogol said. "And, we're trying to always balance that so we can come up with the best proposed route."
The demonstrators took up about a tenth of a mile of the side of the road on Rt. 340 on the West Virginia-Virginia state line. Plenty of cars drove by in the two hours they were out on the side of the street, hearing both cheers and jeers from those passing by.
"It's been very hard to get the word out," Newman said. "For about a year now [PATH] has been talking about it, they're not putting out the notice to the people, so we have become their notification system. A lot of people still don't know that path is going to run through their neighborhoods."
Some scenic neighborhoods like those around 340, which already have power lines running through them.
When TV-3 Winchester News talked with Gogol, he told us that he and his crew were still reviewing more than 3,000 letters offering suggestions to what should be done.
PATH is a proposed high-voltage power line that will span almost 300 miles through West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.

Welcome to AmeriKa (America is dead in my mind) where big business rules the day and the all mighty dollar is worth people's homes and health. This is the most disgusting and unbelievable expereince of my life time. We built our home 5 years ago in hopes of raising our family in a safe and pretty location. This relocation is growing into a nightmare. I learned our health (wife and 3 kids) will be at risk and our property value will drop 50% (if they don't level my home). Not to mention the enjoyable sight of a 200 foot tower in my backyard. How do people sleep at night when their career centers around this kind of rape and abuse? They are creating something that destoys the environment and the health of the people in the area. Life is great, isn't it? Big business makes me sick! Karma will eventually rule in the end, but that doesn't rid me of the pure rage running through my veins. Where are you governor? Our representative in this matter!
What Gogol didn’t tell you is that PATH has been chased out of Pennsylvania, and Berkley County, WV. Dominion Power will own this and is looking for the Path of least resistance. Power lines produce Electro-Magnetic Fields and it’s been documented in a study by NOVEC and the Commonwealth of Virginia that these power lines cause leukemia, and possibly other forms of cancer. They also affect birds in flight and cause bees to not return to their hives (which will negatively effects farming). Acid rain, greenhouse gases, and cancer are not acceptable solutions. Green energy is the answer; both short and long term. Protect our environment and protect our families. The powerline will be less than 3/4 miles from my house. It concerns me as my wife and I may have to leave the county. The prohibitive cost of this and the 10 mile destruction zone (50% of Jefferson County) is Electric bills go up, WV Governor wanting to reenact Power Line Tax Bill, valuation of premises in county dropping so our taxes go up more on Personal Property, and who knows what else for the lost revenue. Not to mention that a 125% reimbursement to Imminent Domain homes failed in WV Legislature. What about these people? Worse yet it will be about 1/8 mile or less from South Jefferson Elementary school. School kids aren't EMF Lab Rats. Oxford University study says there is a 70% increase in Childhood cancers when children are 650 feet or less from a powerline. Well, it will still be too many even at further distances. Others will be losing their houses. One guy I spoke with just bought his house a month ago. That's how poorly the news about PATH has been.
