Tammy Shoremount and Freda Jackson have hit the 300 mile mark Tuesday after reaching a small town outside of Mountainair, New Mexico.

They are riding 1,800 miles on their horses to benefit the Blue Ridge Hospice. Shoremount says Jackson was ill today but she is doing okay and that has been the worst of their problems so far.

"It is unbelievable. It is so different from where we live," says Shoremount. "There is just nothing but wide open space and the nearest store is 45 minutes away and it's just a little small store that closes early," adds Shoremount.

As someone in Mountainair who waited in vain for the trail riders to arrive on the announced date while trying - also in vain - to get current information about their progress, I'm pleased to read your "Ride of a Lifetime" series and learn about at least two of the individual riders. I'll be posting their story on my community blog, Mountainair Arts (http://mountainairarts.blogspot.com). It should strike a chord with many local readers - and perhaps make up for Best of America's cavalier disregard of the effort towns like Mountainair make to welcome them.
