With recent discussion of closing rest stops around the commonwealth the Frederick County Visitor's center is asking VDOT to reconsider, calling it a safety risk.

Natalie Wills of the visitor's center says with I-81 being a large avenue for trucks - getting rid of the rest stop near Harrisonburg will increase the amount of tired drivers on Virginia's roadways.

"A lot of localities are like, 'hey, maybe this will work out for us, that these people will come into our communities instead,' and that's what we had thought as well," Wills said. "But, we're a case study that that's not the case."

VDOT says it will be closing down almost half of it's rest stops.

The New Market Rest Stop is among those on the list to be closed by July 1 to help eliminate a portion of the deficit.
