With the average price of gasoline nationwide at $3.79 a gallon, people are definitely feeling a pain in their pockets.
AAA reports that Virginia's average is $3.70, up from $3.30 just one month ago.
"The gas tank is an adventure when you hand somebody $40.00 to fill up your tank and at one time it was half that. Two years ago we took a trip around the country and we were paying under $2.00 a gallon for gasoline," said Ray Piazza, who traveled to Winchester from Redding, PA to celebrate his anniversary with his wife.
The gas station is not the only place people are feeling the rise in fuel costs.
Everyday items are costing more.
"When you buy groceries, when you buy clothes, when you go to the movie theater- all of that increase is affected [by the cost of gas]," said Piazza.
Many work environments are changing too.
"We are starting to carpool now and the boss is really getting sticky about the generators being run all the time and he's watching the gas cards, he used to give us gas cards and he's watching the prices of it and he's cutting back on it. It's just terrible," said Robert Eldreth, who works as a carpenter.
Most people agree that the price of gas has significantly reduced the amount of money they have to spend on leisure activities.
"I want to go to some of the concerts coming up, but the drive up there to DC is kind of getting expensive, so I'm probably not going to go, so that kind of stinks," commented Neile Hannick.
And unfortunately for many Memorial Day Weekend is no exception.
"I had a boat last year, but this time I don't because of the gas prices. Hopefully ll have a motorcycle by then to go out and enjoy the weekend," said Hannick.
