It was just another day and another honor for Dr. James Davis, who now has a lifetime membership from the Top of Virginia Building Association.
The group has only bestowed the honor on one other occasion.
"It means a lot to us, as Jim Davis has meant so much to the community," said TVBA President Mike Perry. "Not only has he helped the building community in the transportation [arena], but also
with an educated workforce- he's helped the economy grow."
Tribute aside, Dr. Davis also had some business to attend to.
Appointed to the Commonwealth Transportation Board in 2005 by former Governor Mark Warner, Dr. Davis offered his insight on the region's growing transportation issues and what it will take to
get things moving.
"I was a legislator, and I know how hard it is to think about raising revenue," noted the retiring president. "But my message to them, and to everybody that I talk to tonight, is going to be that we have to support them, and encourage them to raise the revenue that's needed to invest in infrastructure."
After portions of the groundbreaking transportation package that passed in 2007 crumbled at this year's general assembly, lawmakers are frustrated- but determined- to patch up the holes.
"It certainly reduced the dollars that we were expecting to be able to put in to transportation," observed Delegate Beverly Sherwood, R-29th. "We're looking for a fix certainly for that. But I'm going to
tell you...I am reluctant to talk about statewide taxes or an increase in the gas tax."
According to Dr. Davis, any likely improvements in the region, such as a Route 37 bypass or changes along Interstate 81, can't be completed without greater funding.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board has 17 members.
The group is responsible for regulating and funding transportation in Virginia.
