The sound of a car engine turning on is a typical sound one a local couple is feeling more and more lucky to hear every day.

Their 1990 Honda Civic just hit 500,000 miles this week.

Maria Rose and her husband bought the car back in ‘92. It had just 48,000 miles on it then. But being the traveling entertainers they are, they say driving from the Midwest, to Canada, to Texas to New Orleans has added a lot of mileage.

They drove through Winchester right after the 500,000-mile mark and told TV3 their secret to keeping the Honda running.

“We very much keep up with the oil changes, Honda recommends 7,500 and I don't like to go that far. Aren't you afraid of taking that out on the road with that many miles on it, I wouldn't drive that. And I don’t think twice about it because it's been so dependable to us. And I'm sure that there will come a time when we may totally break down on the road, it may totally fall apart but you know what, if it fell apart today I'd say, you've done really good old girl,” Rose says.

Rose says she's saved every part that's needed to be replaced in the Honda. She dates it and writes the mileage on it.
