With the "go-green" programs growing across the country, you might be surprised to learn that you can help save the environment and your money with a little landscaping.

Lynne Phillips, Manager at Natural Art Garden Center explained on Sunday afternoon, "If you think about an asphalt shingle roof, it's got asphalt on it. It's oil. We're literally putting that water into the river. We shouldn't be doing that."

With clean water becoming a prized commodity and the rising cost of fresh produce, some people living in Strasburg are coming up with ways to protect the Shenandoah river and grow fruits and vegetables in their own backyards.

For owner, Michael Marcheterre and his husband, transforming their backyard was the way to go.

"Actually, the biggest joy for us is community, and we have wonderful neighbors that come over and participate and share ideas and just move things forward," explained the gardener.

It's the collaboration between neighbors and local businesses that is transforming a small corner of Strasburg into an environmental oasis.

Phillips continued, "The rain gardens were created to capture all of the runoff from the house and the ham shack, fix a couple drainage problems that they were having, and by doing so, he's reduced the runoff, he's increased the wildlife habitat, and also beautified their back yard."

With an especially green yard, the owners and collaborators hold special events to spread the word about what you can do to make a difference.

"It's very nice to see the people come and take advantage of seeing this garden and learn a little bit about the rain garden, and just see what you can do, because anybody can really do this," said Mary Redmon, one of the community gardeners.

As harvest season approaches, this small corner of town will be saving some green in their wallets and around their homes, which is something that everyone should be a part of.

Natural Art Garden Center offers workshops on how to add these green touches to your neighborhood.
