Morgantown wants state regulators to halt Marcellus shale drilling within a mile of the city's water supply.
The Dominion Post reports that City Council approved a resolution Tuesday asking the Department of Environmental Protection to stop issuing permits until the water and public safety, health and welfare can be protected. The resolution also asks the DEP to halt drilling that's already under way.
Council members also approved on first reading a proposed ordinance that would ban horizontal oil and gas drilling in the city. The proposal would allow conventional drilling if companies have a city permit.
A public hearing must be held before final action on the proposed ordinance is taken.
