Volunteers Pick Up Thousands of Pounds of Junk from VA Streams

Volunteers who pitched in for the annual Clean the Bay Day fished out an interesting array of items, ranging from two live kittens to a toilet seat.

The sponsor of the annual cleanup, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, said those discoveries were among 200,000 pounds of cast-offs that were pulled from Virginia streams and shorelines last Saturday.

Besides the kittens and commode, volunteers found a car transmission, a dead Atlantic sturgeon, the carcass of a 40-pound red drum and countless cigarette butts, cans and bottles and food wrappers.

The kittens were delivered to a local animal shelter.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that more than 6,300 volunteers took part in the cleanup. Teams worked from Charlottesville to the Eastern Shore.
