The University of Virginia's School of Architecture has launched the Center for Design and Health to advance the planning of patient-oriented facilities and healthy neighborhoods and cities.

A statement from the center says its goal is to empower collaborations between faculty and communities amid the challenges of an aging population, the rising cost of medical care, increased poverty and environmental pollution.

The center will help jumpstart projects that incorporate experts from design, policy planners and health professionals.

Among the initial collaborations include a post-occupancy study for the Shands Cancer Center in Gainesville, Florida and a partnership with the UVA Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center.
