The soggy weather didn't stop a mob of people assembling in downtown Front Royal on Saturday.
As the rain drops fell a small group of consumers armed with nothing but cash and rain gear, set out to spend for the benefit of local businesses.
Curtis Williams, a shopper in the cash mob, explained, "I've been here my whole life. I'm in my middle 50s, so they're a part of Americana. They're kind of like Rockwell to me. They're small-town."
The mob was organized by Neal Jacob, who took his cue from an international event.
"I read about it and I was like, you know, I think that's just the thing that Front Royal needs to draw attention to the downtown businesses," said Jacob.
He, and a group of supporters mobbed several stores in Front Royal, one of which was the Second Chance store, which is putting the money to good use.
Mary Poston, assistant manager, of the store, said, "Oh, it increases our sales and gets the message out to people what we're here for. We're here to help abused women and children."
Not only is the mob helping businesses, but it's also teaching kids how to spend a little more responsibly.
Ariel Jacob, a younger shopper, said, "I gave all my money to my mom, but next week my mom will go to the bank and get me as much as I gave her."
Taking a little cash out for sake of these businesses is something Jacob hopes others will continue to do.
"I've already had businesses lobbying me to schedule with them for future events," he concluded.
The mob visited about four stores in the downtown area. Leaders recommend having at least $20 available for cash mobs in the future.
