Dollar General Coming To Middletown

Town officials say, the store will be a huge economic boost for the area.

The Dollar General will be built at 7695 Main Street. Dollar General wants to demolish or move the current structure which is inside the historic district. It was built about a hundred years ago and the Mayor says, it has no historical significance.

The store will be about 9,000 square feet and has been designed to match the storefronts of other strip malls and shops along Main Street.

It will bring about 10 full and part-time jobs to the area and would stimulate some revenue from permit fees. Middletown will also get a percentage of the annual sales tax from dollar general sales.

Mayor Mark Brown says though it's not a big box store, it will be an anchor store for Middletown.

“Customer count of 250 people a day. 250 people coming to a Dollar General doesn't sound like a lot but 250 people a day coming to Middletown is a significant amount and if just 10% of those people stop and buy some gas, grab some lunch or a snack from one of the restaurants here, that's going to have a big impact on our business community and of course our tax revenue,” Mayor Brown says.

Mayor Brown says town officials have sent out several surveys to get citizens opinions about a dollar general coming to the area and he says about 90% are all for it because of the economic boost it would bring.

“Our citizens here should have the convenience of a local store. If you want a box of paperclips, you can't buy them in Middletown, you either go to Strasburg or Stephens City so you have to plan your day around buying a box of paperclips,” Mayor Brown adds.
