| A Whole Lot of Nothing.... |
I do realize that I have not written a blog in a while and I am sorry. The second half of the year proved to be much more tedious than the first, something I was not expecting. I have been overloaded with papers, projects, and tests at school AND a bunch of paperwork from the undergraduate admissions office at the University of Virginia (even though they have yet to send out admissions letters). Tonight is perfect because I only have to define bolded vocabulary words for AP Bio… something I can do during first block while I’m a guidance aid. So, a lot has happened since my “Christmas Shoes” blog, both locally and nationally. Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton are further in the primary process and John McCain has managed to get 1,025 pledged delegates to become the Republican nominee. Black History Month passed and each day all of the Millbrook students got insight into the lives of a pioneer in black history through PowerPoint slides done by yours truly. Just last week there were two schools on lock down. I’m not sure of all of the details from Handley (I’m sure Ms. Elise D. can elaborate more on them) but from what I can gather from the newspapers is that some guy brought a gun to school and everything went down hill from there. The next school on lock down was Millbrook. I can give you the story firsthand… I was sitting in AP Bio listening to one of my classmates present the Nematode Phylum and one of my friends got up to yell, “there are three cop cars outside and one ambulance.” Being the nonchalant, passive guy that I am, I sat at my desk as my classmates rushed over to the window. Then one of our administrators came over the PA and announced, “Teachers please read your emails.” That’s when I thought that this was like something from a movie… and I liked it! It was a thrill that Winchester, especially Frederick County rarely gets. The email only said that the school was on lockdown and to not let students leave the classroom. There was a bomb threat. Needless to say, each student finished their presentations and after about 15 minutes of captivity, we were all released. It was a “high stress day” at Millbrook. Another thing that I must mention is the sports program at Millbrook. You may have noticed a headline in the Winchester Star last month that read: The year of the pioneer;” and you may also notice that in the Star, our basketball team is still being reported on. This is because the sports teams at Millbrook have excelled above every other school in the Shenandoah area! Our basketball team won the regional championship and went into the playoffs with only one defeat. This past Saturday we played at JMU and won 74-53… it was an exciting game. On Thursday, we will be going down to Richmond to play a state qualifying semi-final game, and if we win there then it’s off to states. Our wrestling team placed fourth in the STATE with three state champions. The volleyball team finished its regionally undefeated season in January. The jazz, symphonic and concert bands all received SUPERIIOR ratings at district festival and if the choirs can do so as well then for the third year in a row Millbrook will be a Blue Ribbon School. It is a truly remarkable year over here in Pioneer land and I think we can accredit that to the class of 2008. We are AMAZING! I feel its time to stop but don’t think that I have forgotten about the quote of the week: “So much of our time is preparation, so much is routine, and so much retrospect, that the path of each man's genius contracts itself to a very few hours.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson.
