Race fans (and other sports enthusiasts) spend a lot of time outdoors, and sometimes hot temperatures can be overwhelming. What can you do to stay cool at the track? First, make sure to slather on the sunscreen before you even leave for the track! I prefer to use the spray-on mist kind because it's quick and less messy. Look for a label that says it's long lasting... I use a continuous coverage SPF 45, and I have successfully prevented sunburn. Next, take some water with you, and make sure you drink plenty of water at the track! I usually go through several bottles. Bring a hat to keep the sun off your head and sunglasses. Sometimes clouds can bring relief from the bright sun, but if there are no clouds you should spend some time in the shade. Even if the temperature is only 78 degrees, the sun beating down in July can burn you very quickly. Be sure to wear light weight, light colored clothing. Depending on what track you're at, there is probably a lot of walking involved, so it's a good idea to wear sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes. If all else fails, you should probably seek out an air conditioned building or car. These tips have kept me feeling good at the track, and I hope they can help you too.
This weekend I am going to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the ALMS/IndyCar weekend, and I am very excited! I was there last year and have shared some photos below. Please note that since I will be at the track, I will not be able to update the forecast. If you have plans to go to the track, be sure to check the weather locally before you leave. (Or if you're going to Mid-Ohio, just find me, haha!)
Here are the forecasts for this weekend's races:
IndyCar Series - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Sunday (7/20) at 1:30 p.m. ET RIGHT HERE ON TV3 (ABC)! Qualifying is Saturday, and the Indy Lights race both Saturday and Sunday. High pressure has dominated all week, and it will slide to the east over the weekend. A slow moving cold front may approach the area on Sunday. Ahead of the front, the return flow around the high pressure will draw in warm, moist air. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible on Saturday and Sunday. It will be warm on Saturday under partly cloudy skies with a high temperature in the upper 80's. Sunday will feature a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the mid 80's. At race time, the temperature will be near 85 degrees.
American Le Mans Series - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Saturday (7/19) at 2:10 p.m. ET. Televised on Sunday (7/20) at 12 p.m. ET on NBC. Qualifying is Friday evening. See above for in depth discussion. Friday will be sunny and hot with a high near 90, so things should be fine for qualifying. For the race on Saturday, there is a chance of some pop-up showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, otherwise skies will be partly cloudy. The temperature at race time will be near 87 degrees.
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series - Kentucky Speedway, Saturday (7/19) at 6:30 p.m. ET on SPEED. High pressure in control over the Ohio Valley will shift east, bringing hot and humid conditions to Kentucky. There is a slight chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm due to daytime heating. The high temperature will be near 90 with a race time temperature near 88 degrees.
NASCAR Nationwide Series - Gateway International Raceway, Saturday (7/19) at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. A ridge of high pressure has created a typical summertime pattern. Skies will be most sunny through the day. The temperature will be very hot in the afternoon - reaching into the lower 90's. For the start of the race, expect a temperature near 88.
PA Hillclimb Association - Rose Valley, Saturday (7/19) and Sunday (7/20). High pressure will bring hot and humid weather for the weekend in Trout Run, PA. A front could approach the area on Sunday which would spread some clouds and chance of showers and storms across the region. Saturday will be hot and humid with a temperature near 90 degrees. There is a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. On Sunday, the clouds could keep the temperature in the mid-80's. If there is more sun than clouds, expect higher temperatures.
Winchester Speedway - Saturday (7/19), gates open at 4:30 p.m., racing starts at 7 p.m. High pressure kept the northern Shenandoah Valley dry and sunny all week. Saturday will be warm and more humid with a chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. The high will be near 90 degrees.
